Toa Payoh New Town!
.... was the name I grew up with 40yrs ago. The Toa Payoh New Town is the 2nd oldest new-town in Singapore! My dad used to tell me stories about how when we first moved in, I was only 3.
It so happened I was living in Tanglin Halt, before that. And when TP was ready my dad brought the family over. We moved in here. At the end of the day, I told my dad that I wanted to go home. No matter what he said, I still insisted that I wanted to go "home". :-)
Well ... a loving dad he was, he took me down to the swings at the playground and slowly explained to me that this is my new home now.
Recently, as I was driving to my dad's to visit (err ... not that I don't do that regularly) I had to slow the car drastically as an old lady was crossing the street. At that very moment, I thot - "Man! This is an Old Town! With all the old-folks walking along the streets."
Truely, it is an old town now. A generation has passed and Toa Payoh is no longer new and it had indeed aged. Gracefully ... I must add. A lot of the landscape has changed over the years. Many for the better. But, oh! How I long to view photos of the old New Town again ... Googled it ... but came up empty. :(
